WordPress for Toastmasters is a volunteer-led project to create software that helps clubs market and organize themselves more effectively. Building on the world’s most popular web publishing platform, it adds Toastmasters-specific extensions for tasks like agenda management.
Your host for this webinar will be me, David F. Carr, the author of the Toastmasters add-ons. I will demonstrate how to set up one of these sites and allow plenty of time for questions.
Like WordPress itself, this software is free and open source. If you don’t have the skills or the budget to set up a website from scratch, the toastmost.org service associated with the project makes it easy to get started for free (the site is ad-supported — sponsors wanted!).
WordPress for Toastmasters is a project I started while serving as VP Education and later President at my home club, Club Awesome in Coral Springs, Florida. I was frustrated by the limitations of Free Toast Host (the default website option for most clubs) for web and social media marketing. I also wanted better tools for engaging with club members online and encouraging them to sign up for meeting roles. Then, once other club leaders started asking how they could get access to the software, I made it freely available. That was almost four years ago.
Having invested a lot of time in improving the software, I would like more people to use it. I am also looking for volunteers to spread the word and educate others about the availability of this option, as well as people with programming and design skills who can help improve it.
The greatest strengths of the platform come not from my own work but from the contributions of thousands of web developers from around the world who continually improve improve WordPress, making sure it keeps pace with the latest web technologies. WordPress is used by major publications including Time, Forbes, and the New Yorker as well as bloggers and small businesses. The core system can be expanded with many optional plugin modules, in addition to my own.
