The introduction of a Toastmost mobile app for club members and leaders is reviving interest in the Toastmost/WordPress for Toastmasters project, including translation for both the app and web versions of the software.
I’m looking for multilingual volunteers who can help with translation into French (some work done), Spanish, and other languages.
Mobile app UI in French
Limited translation of French words and phrases is now available in the Toastmost mobile app, thanks to an encouraging nudge I got from Toastmasters Alexandre Matte (2nd place winner in the 2022 World Championship of Public Speaking and cohost of the Great Convos Podcast).
While welcoming the introduction of the app, he immediately followed up with a question about support for languages other than English. He represents one of the French speaking regions of Canada, but of course there are Toastmasters from around the world who conduct meetings in their native languages.
There is now a minimal implementation of support for French in the Toastmost app, based on some work I did with a club from France a couple of years ago, but volunteer support will be required to make it more complete. There’s also more technical work to be done to make sure the web version of the digital agenda tools keep pace with the app.
How you can help
You can contribute new and improved translations using this Google Sheets spreadsheet.
Ideally, I would also get an expert in each language approved as an translation editor in the WordPress.org open source software project for my Toastmasters agenda management plugin (see example for the French translation).
There are several French language translations pending in that system that no one has reviewed and approved yet. The advantage of this system is that approved translations become instantly available to any user of the software, without requiring them to update to a new version.
Update: Contribute from the app
The latest release includes a tool you can use to contribute suggested translations directly from the app. Your suggestions become available to other members of your club and become eligible for integration into the app code for the benefit of other clubs.
